About Stephen Power


Stephen Power MA, BSc (Hons), PG Dip Ed, Dip. Psychotherapy has an extensive background in psychiatric nursing, Mental Health education, Counselling and Psychotherapy training and clinical supervision.

Stephen trained in psychoanalytic psychotherapy in the faculty of medicine at the University of Liverpool, and also in Cognitive Analytic Psychotherapy with Dr Anthony Ryle's team, via Guys and St. Thomas Hospital, in the UK. He also has a clinical supervision training from Keele University, UK. 

Stephen also holds an MA - with a thesis on the parallel process in clinical supervision; an honours degree in Health Sciences, a Post-Graduate Diploma in Education, a Diploma in Psychotherapy and 6 psychiatric nursing qualifications, with extensive clinical experience in that field beginning in the early 1970's.

He was clinical specialist in psychotherapy with Liverpool Health Authority between 1988 and 1992 and has extensive experience of a range of therapeutic modalities, including long-term psychotherapy, brief psychotherapy, group therapy and family therapy. As a lecturer, his knowledge of the major therapeutic counselling and psychotherapy modalities is very solid.  

Having held several senior clinical and higher-education posts in the UK and Ireland - including Senior Lecturer in Psychotherapy at Anglia Ruskin University; Principal Lecturer in Mental Health at Christ Church College Canterbury and Principal Lecturer in Mental Health Nursing at HSE Limerick - over a thirty two year period, Stephen now lives in County Limerick and works in private practice as a counselling and psychotherapy lecturer & trainer and clinical supervision consultant.

He is the author of an acclaimed text book and a book chapter on clinical supervision, and numerous journal articles on psychotherapy and supervision. He also presents a monthly "Mental health Matters" slot on West Limerick 102 radio.

Stephen works in private practice as a counsellor, clinical supervisor, consultant, writer, lecturer and trainer on all mental health, counselling and psychotherapy subjects. His full c.v. (resumé) is available on request.
